Baby Chakraborty: Kolkata:- The Calcutta High Court has discharged the DOPD (Department of Personnel and Training) from the case in the public interest litigation (PIL) against former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal for destroying evidence in the RG Kar case. Along with this, the Centre also submitted a report on Thursday in this regard, stating that the Centre has a role if the state fails. In response to the Centre’s response, the Division Bench of the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court summoned affidavits from all parties. The next hearing of the case is on December 23.
Vineet Goyal is the main architect of the destruction of evidence in the RG Kar case. A public interest litigation was filed in the Calcutta High Court alleging that he had misused his power to destroy information about the victim’s incident.
In Thursday’s hearing, the Centre submitted a report stating that if any complaint is made against the IPS officers working in the state, it is the responsibility of the state to consider it. However, if the state fails to do so, then an appeal can be made to the Centre. If the Union Home Ministry feels that it can conduct a departmental inquiry, then arrangements can be made accordingly.
