Baby Chakraborty: Delhi:- The Union Cabinet meeting on Wednesday passed the ‘One Nation One Vote’ proposal. According to Cabinet sources, this proposal will be presented in the form of a bill in the winter session of the Parliament. It is said in this proposal that to continue the pace of development of the country and to prevent wastage of money, the votes of local administrations such as Lok Sabha, various state assemblies and municipalities-panchayats should be held simultaneously. According to the proposal, if these polls are held in phases within 100 days, a democratic country like India will save a lot of money. The work of development will not be disrupted. BJP has been advocating for the adoption of ‘one country, one vote’ policy for many years.
After Narendra Modi became Prime Minister for the second term, that thought intensified. A high-powered committee was formed under the leadership of former President Ram Nath Kovind. The committee submitted its report to President Draupadi Murmu last March. According to the report, opinions of various political parties, Supreme Court and High Court judges, lawyers, Election Commission and constitutional experts have been taken. However, 15 political parties, including the main opposition Congress, have opposed this proposal. In order to introduce the ‘one country one vote’ policy, it is necessary to amend the constitution first. For that, two-thirds support for the bill is required. BJP and its allies do not have that support.
It is also mandatory to pass amendments to the constitution in the state and union assemblies. That’s right, if Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha votes are taken at the same time, the cost will be reduced a lot. The government cannot take any policy decision from the time of announcement of polling date till the end of the polling period. As a result, developmental work is disrupted. This waste of time and money can be avoided if the Lok Sabha and Assembly votes are taken simultaneously.
