Confiscated goods have to be packed in warehouses for accommodation. Police stations all over the country have this problem more or less. If a car is impounded in a case, it is often forced to keep it in the police station premises.
Some cases drag on for years. It then becomes a challenge to preserve the material seized in that case in the same manner over a long period of time, mainly due to location. Identification of items seized ten years ago among thousands of seized items also sometimes becomes a problem. Chandannagar Police Commissionerate, led by Commissioner Amit Javalgi, has tried to find an innovative technological solution to this problem.
Malkhanas have been fully ‘digitized’ through barcodes in all police stations of Chandannagar Police Commissionerate, so that each item can be identified easily. This initiative to modernize the investigation and prosecution process has recently been recognized by the Central Government.
